It is the first time we've heard anything more in depth about the play, and about Damien and Owen Teale's characters.
For anyone who missed it, fingers crossed it will be available later on the BBC iplayer, and here is a rough transcript of the first part, about No Man's Land!
Q: What's No Man's Land all about?
OT: The No Man's Land I suppose is a description of where you can go to in your mind, where you feel you might be safe, because the pain of life is too much. Post traumatic I suppose is what comes up, is hinted at constantly, never explained. And with the aid of alcohol you have the central person who's in this house, who cannot bear the pain of his existence.. and so he's encouraged by these two younger men to stay in No Man's Land, rather than reality..
Q: It's a Harold Pinter play, so the audience kind of know what they are in for, but come the half way point people were confused, were they meant to be?
DM I think because there is so much in this play, it's so dense and there are so many themes hidden under so many layers of character, that people can be confused. Because I think sometimes there's a pressure on people .. 'I need to understand this, I need to get it', and actually I think audiences just need to relax a little bit , sit back and just absorb what's happening .... and I think that's when person 'a' will take something from it, peron b witll take something else, person c will say the play is about this, person d will say the play is about this..
Q. And that's the beauty of it
DM: That's what's so great about it, actually every night there's a slightly different performance, a slightly different theme I would say comes out stronger than any other
(On Ian M and Pat Stew)
OT: we are the squires
Q: Once you're introduce the humour, the laughter, the relaxed atmosphere of us all being comfortable in these two giants' presence..is very sharply removed and we're terrified by you two even shaking your hands as you came into..it's stayed with me.. are you glad? are you proud? is that what it's meant to do?
OT: I think it is, its our job you have to change the play you have to tip it on its head when we come on, because it's not explained who we are, we could be two guys who just walked in off the street
Q: How's it been then have you enjoyed this experience? How is it working with the two giants as well
DM: We are like a happy family and with Sean the director as well we had four weeks rehearsal and the chemistry was there from the get-go, that comes from Ian and Patrick and from Sean being so welcoming and open and generous to myself and Owen
Q: So what did you think when you got the call?
DM: I was pinching myself
OT: It's a bit of a privilege really isn't it
DM: totally
OT: to have such stature and calibre and to be invited to join
Q: I could say that about you two though, you are the younger versions maybe?
[laughter]
OT Yeah, I think I'd love to play Hirst
DM I'd love to play Spooner, yes. One day, one day.
You're very welcome Lisa! There was an awful lot more, but the rest was largely not about NML. Definitely worth a listen later when it becomes available on the radio iplayer
Will definitely need to have a listen later on then. The last time they interviewed him when he was promoting Travelling Light, they asked him stuff pertaining to the city.
Cute pics and great to read some of the transcript. I love hearing actors talking about their creative processes. Good to know that it's supposed to be confusing!
So lovely to hear how the four actors all get on: "We are like a happy family and with Sean the director as well, we had four weeks rehearsal and the chemistry was there from the get-go, that comes from Ian and Patrick and from Sean being so welcoming and open and generous to myself and Owen.."
And particularly striking is the menace created in the play when Damien and Owen T's characters arrive.
Owen T's description of No Man's Land is very moving: "The No Man's Land I suppose is a description of where you can go to in your mind, where you feel you might be safe, because the pain of life is too much."
Currently listening to the interview and it's fab, though the interviewer so far has got Sir Ian's name wrong and Damien's name wrong (who is Damien Molloy???) Both gentlemen have beautiful speaking voices.
Thanks for the link, domino, although having to listen to a load of guff in between the interviews reminded me why I don't listen to Radio Newcastle. Not only did she make a hash of the names, she also alluded to Damien's new series, Suspects, starting this week! Did she do no background reading at all? She didn't even know he'd been interviewed by them a few years previously when he appeared in "Travelling Light".
Both Damien and Owen gave excellent interviews, very interesting, although I notice Damien ducked out of talking about any future projects. It would have been nice if he'd had a chance to mention Tiger Raid and Fell, but I suppose you can't have everything (or so my mother always told me).
"Suspects" tonight, "No Man's Land" tomorrow - I'm being well and truly spoiled!
I cringed when she said "Damien Molloy." She seemed like she had never heard of Suspects, and is a "big fan" of Ripper Street but it almost sounded as if she thought he was still part of that show. Strange.
I enjoyed listening to Damien's voice though and his smiles in the pics are as adorable as ever. I'm excited to learn that his character is intimidating. Sounds like fun.

Well....yaay! for BBC Radio Newcastle giving us our 2nd damo interview!! It's a real treat to hear Damien talking about his work, and I really wish it happened more often. I bought the play text recently with the intention of reading it before I go to see it...but have decided to wait until after. I feel like I know enough (or not!) about the play already.
I am soooo excited by the prospect of seeing Damien being intimidating/sinister live on stage.....
Yes Damien was interviewed on BBC Radio Newcastle April 2012 when he was in 'Travelling Light' and touring the UK. He mentioned the same taxi driver and his tour of Newcastle in that one too!
That interview is no longer available but for anyone interested, we have a transcript on the forum here
