At long last - here's some positive news about 'The Current War'!

action

Benedict Cumberbatch's 'The Current War' to Get International Release

The Weinstein Co. buyer Lantern Entertainment and 13 Films will distribute the Harvey Weinstein-tainted Thomas Edison biopic, as well as the unreleased horror film 'Polaroid.'

13 Films has partnered with Lantern Entertainment, an affiliate of The Weinstein Co. buyer Lantern Capital Partners, to handle foreign distribution of the Harvey Weinstein-tainted historical epic The Current War.

The film, which focuses on the rivalry between electricity innovators Thomas Edison (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) and George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon), was a casualty in last year's fallout of the revelations about the disgraced movie mogul, who acted as producer on the project.

Lantern Capital Partners subsequently paid $289 million for what remained of TWC.

The partners will also handle the foreign distribution of the unreleased horror pic Polaroid after both titles were acquired through Lantern’s acquisition of assets of TWC. Current War also stars Nicholas Hoult, Tom Holland, Katherine Waterston and Tuppence Middleton.

Initially due for release last November, Current War has gone without a domestic release date. The film, directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, first bowed at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.

Polaroid, based on the award-winning short by Lars Klevberg and from the producers of the The Ring and The Grudge, centers on high school loner Bird Fitcher, who he has no idea what dark secrets are tied to the vintage Polaroid camera she stumbles upon.

13 Films is an international distribution and finance company founded by Tannaz Anisi and based in Los Angeles. Lantern is an affiliate of Lantern Capital Partners, a indie studio with a library of over 270 films, including The King’s Speech and The Artist.

Yes, it's looking like a 2019 release, and an international one! woohoo!
It would have been shocking (no pun intended) if this film never saw the light (), considering the cast and creative team. I'm very excited! action

That's good news.  I was so looking forward to Damien and Benedict in the same movie.

I guess with the anticipation of waiting endlessly for this to be shown here in the US, I have become a real history geek reading about the people portrayed in the movie with obviously Damien's character my main focus. It really was a fascinating time in our history and the characters truly jump off the page. I can't wait to see this...….

The themes of The Current War are indeed fascinating Susan and while historical, there will also be relevance to current times. I am less interested in the politics, the battle between two moguls, than the awesomeness of their inventions, and that is what I hope to see lots of in this film.

We have a little about Damien's Bourke Cockran in this topic, but if you stumble across more interesting stuff please do come and add it here, I for one would be very interested to read!

There is still no release date yet, or info on how it will be released. At this stage I wonder if a theatrical release is still on the cards or straight to VOD? Either way please let it see the light of day soon!

The Current War has a release date for Korea - January 2019!

Hopefully this is the first of many international releases from Lantern!

I was secretly hoping there would be a new trailer though - with a certain Mr Molony in it!

Interesting!

From google translate:

"Today in London, the last shooting day of my long-suffering project The War of Currents / The Current War. Work on the film lasted 5 years and is worthy of a separate film novel. Benedict Cumberbatch (who played Thomas Edison) will finally tell the world about what kind of “war” electricity has come to our homes! Soon on the screens!"

Let's hope for 2 things in 2019: 1. that the film was re-cut to include more Damien and 2. It is actually released SOON!

Here is an article in The Washington Post mentioning 'The Current War.'

currentwar15.jpg

It's good to know there is a bidding war around the film - but I thought Lantern had already bought it, with 13 Films distributing. Perhaps that is just for international distribution and this refers to domestic?

BUT THIS SENTENCE IS SOO EXCITING

"The movie has been recut since its Toronto 2017 showing, with Martin Scorsese even giving notes to the director"

Martin bloody Scorsese! action

Sounds like we may get to see it after all this time. If recut means more Damien not less, I'm happy 😊 I would just like to see him on the big screen (saw 'Kill my Friends' on streaming not in the cinema).

Yes, exactly Ellie, but the Kemmler story was completely relevant to the war between Edison and Westinghouse, so cutting it would be crazy!

It's always preferable to for a film to get a theatrical release and be seen on a big screen, always. But at this point, VOD, straight to DVD, I don't care - just let us see it! action

More on the buying and selling, and re editing (and reshooting!) of The Current War

Via Variety

"David Glasser, the former chief operating officer of the Weinstein Co., is launching a $300 million film and TV company with the backing of billionaire investor Ron Burkle......named 101 Studios..."

"Glasser and his team will head to the Sundance Film Festival this week, where he is expected to be in the hunt for titles. His new company is said to be eyeing domestic distribution rights to “The Current War,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch, a Weinstein Co. project that has been tied up in the bankruptcy process."

"The film, which debuted at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, was initially set for release in November 2017. The Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse scandal, which crippled the company, put those plans on hold.

Director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon has been doing some reshooting and re-editing of the film, according to filings in the bankruptcy case. Martin Scorsese is said to be involved as an executive producer, though his representatives did not respond to a request for comment.

Lantern Entertainment, which bought the Weinstein Co. assets in bankruptcy last summer, still holds international rights to the film. The domestic rights are in the hands of East West Bank, which is also providing financing to 101 Studios."

It could just be they've only shown the main cast, Damien's role could be relatively minor. I mean, compared to Cumberbatch . . . .

Yes, we know from the TIFF screening that Damien's appearance was more or less blink and miss it. The film has been re cut since - I have the obvious hopes and fears about that, and would love my hopes to be confirmed!

Some positive The Current War news (via Deadline) - and a domestic release at last!

The whole article is well worth reading. Wow, such a great story and wonderful thing that the director finally gets to make and release the film he wanted all along, thanks to Martin Scorsese!

Sparked By A Martin Scorsese Contract Clause, ‘The Current War’ Gets Second Life & Wide Release Commitment From 101 Studios

Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s The Current War has a new cut and the kind of second chance that most prematurely premiered festival films never get. Upstart 101 Studios has closed a deal for domestic distribution rights and will make The Current War its first substantial theatrical release, eyeing August.

Gomez-Rejon presented them with an overhauled picture that added five scenes and still came in a good ten minutes shorter than the cut that premiered two Toronto festivals ago. The director got the chance to do his own cut because of a lucky unexpected break: a final contractual sign-off by executive producer Martin Scorsese hadn’t been executed, which legally prevented TWC’s new owners — Lantern Entertainment — from setting a quick overseas release with a cut the director disliked

The difference from the Toronto cut to now?

“Everything missing is there now, including the right pacing that escalates the tension between these two men,” Gomez-Rejon said. “The heart of the film is restored: Edison’s relationship with his wife, and the explanation of her fatal illness and what it did to him. You feel her loss deeply and it carries you through as he goes to a dark side without her there to humanize his ambition. Westinghouse has been humanized without making him a saint, and there are now layers and complicated performances so that instead of spoon-fed emotion, everything is earned. The music heightens the tensions of their war. There are new scenes with Tesla, who was never meant to be a lead character but now you see his genius and vulnerability. He doesn’t feel forgotten in this movie, and he gives heart and clarity to the clash between these two men and what drives them to go to such dark places.”

Despite all the difficulties and delays, it sounds like this is going to end up a much better film than before. Let's hope Damien's scenes have made the cut.

It really does Rosie, or at least a film that is more the vision intended by the director and makers---- and that they have reclaimed ownership of after all the horribleness that has surrounded it through no fault of their own. Hopefully this rebirth of the film will feel like a fresh start for all involved. Truly amazing story - perhaps worthy of a film itself.

Fascinated to hear they shot new scenes and that in the toronto version scenes were cut in pre-production. Wish we knew what difference all this makes to Damien's role! There is a mention of the electric chair - which is the aspect of the story between the two big rivals that his character Bourke Cockran would appear in - but not a clue if this means this part of the story was not meant to be there or that it wasn't done properly. or that all the additional material is Tesla, Westinghouse and Edison directly.

"As he watched, he replayed in his head every scene he was forced to cut in pre-production or that he lost in editing that would have made believable the intensity of the rivalry between Edison and Westinghouse. Instead, in that Toronto version, Cumberbatch’s Edison came off a narcissist and Shannon’s Westinghouse too classy a gentleman to get in the mud with him. Until, finally, Edison taunted Westinghouse’s AC current innovations as dangerous, playing up the potential for fatal accidents in a dramatic public presentation. After that, Westinghouse released correspondence showing that the hypocritical Edison served as a technical adviser on the development of the electric chair, this after Edison proclaimed than unlike his rival he would never use electrical power to harm a human being."

“The film was frozen in time, and I found myself dreaming of being able to present to its new owners my vision for how I would fix it; about the scenes that were cut in pre-production that would have explained so much..”

"And then I get the call from my reps,” he said. “I was getting the film back and had six to eight weeks and the chance to shoot one extra day. I was never more prepared for anything in my life. A lot of actors needed to be there on one Saturday in December and they all stepped up. We had this farmhouse and one room was Tesla’s office, another was Edison’s bedroom, and on and on.”

The new trailer appears to be exactly the same as the one released almost 2 years ago though? (and still no sign of Damien!)

Rounding out the cast are Nicholas Hoult as the eccentric inventor Nikola Tesla, Katherine Waterston as Westinghouse’s outspoken wife Marguerite, Tom Holland as Edison’s confident young secretary Samuel Insull, Matthew Macfadyen as the famous financier and banker J.P. Morgan, and Tuppence Middleton as Edison’s supportive wife Mary.

THE CURRENT WAR is produced by Timur Bekmambetov (WANTED) for Bazelevs Production and Basil Iwanyk (A STAR IS BORN) for Thunder Road Pictures. The films executive producers include Martin Scorsese (THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, THE DEPARTED) and Steve Zaillian (SCHINDLER’S LIST, MONEYBALL).
