“I can tell the difference between who I am and a side effect.”
Award-winning chemical romance. Connie and Tristan are taking part in a clinical trial for a new psychoactive drug. So when they start to feel attracted to each other, can they really trust how they feel?
A profound, and funny, play about love, depression and selfhood, winner of the Critics’ Circle Award for Best New Play when it was performed at the National Theatre in 2012.
Susan, the vast majority of BBC Radio programmes can be listened to live and on catch up, via the BBC Radio iplayer internationally. One of the reasons I love Damien doing radio (apart from the obvious) is the accessibility worldwide! When the programme appears in the schedules we will have a link to share.
As with any existing play Damien is announced to appear in, now comes the 'do I or don't I read it beforehand' dilemma!
My feeling is to not read, not only because coming to something first hand is fresh and exciting, but because every production of every play is different, and this being the first ever radio production makes it an extra exciting prospect.
The Google books synopsis for the play is below (obviously don't read if you want no prior knowledge whatsover on the themes of the play!). The Hard Problem slightly comes to mind, anyone else?
Two young volunteers, Tristan and Connie, agree to take part in a clinical drug trial. Succumbing to the gravitational pull of attraction and love, however, Tristan and Connie manage to throw the trial off-course, much to the frustration of the clinicians involved. This funny, moving and perhaps surprisingly human play explores questions of sanity, neurology and the limits of medicine, alongside ideas of fate, loyalty and the inevitability of physical attraction. It premiered at the National Theatre's Cottesloe Theatre in November 2012.
This is brilliant news! I love that Damien does radio work like this. For some reason I always feel like a proper intellectual listening to a radio play! It sounds like a good story too.
Delightful news! We now have our first Damien project of 2018 to look forward to.
Haha! Can't wait to get proper intellectual for the New Year Rosie!
Yes, Damien has an impressive and sustained repertoire and career, with roles and acting projects right across the board; tv, film, theatre and radio. He's becoming a maestro!
I love that Damien makes such interesting and varied choices which really enrich his career. It seems like he wants to keep learning and honing his craft.
Just to mention again - Damien's previous BBC radio programmes have been available internationally on the BBC radio iplayer both live and on catch up, this will be too. So we will all be able to listen together !
Check out the radio iplayer here and download the radio iplayer app here
I hope this info helps everyone both UK and outside the UK!
True fifi! With Damien in the Tis Pity radio production a week earlier, that countdown is going up first (as soon as christmas is over!) Two plays from different periods, but both utterly brilliant. Can't wait.
Perhaps it was only a preliminary date for The Effect mentioned by Samuel West, or the Radio Times schedules will change. I've contacted BBC Radio 3 for clarification or an air date, hopefully we will have an answer soon!
Ah, should have read this before replying to the other thread - I was still working on the assumption of 14th for this one! I’ll have to do a diary check for 28th.

Only noticed it myself a few days after Tis Pity was announced Rosie, but only mentioned it in the other topic, and because noone replied assumed everyone else had already noticed.
So looking forward to this one - and that we can all listen at the same time together again!
