Damien has announced on Instagram he will appear in 'Brassic' - a new TV comedy drama from Sky One!
It's written by Danny Brocklehurst (who wrote Shameless)
"It's based on Joe's background in Chorley and it's about a bunch of guys who never left their home town and have drifted into petty crime." He added: "It's very funny, it's slightly heightened, a little bit silly. It's like the cousin of Shameless and Transpotting, if you can imagine that..."
Damien plays the character Dylan, in a leading role alongside Michelle Keegan and Joe Gilgun.
Definition: “Brassic: Broke, penniless, without means, boracic lint - skint, on the bones of yer arse.”
Joe Gilgun (This is England), Michelle Keegan (Our Girl) and Damien Molony (Ripper Street) are set to star in Brassic, an edgy new original comedy from Sky co-created by Joe Gilgun and BAFTA-winning writer Danny Brocklehurst. Ruth Sheen and Tim Key are also set to star.
Production on the show will start in September for Sky and NOW TV. Written by Danny Brocklehurst (Safe), Brassic, with its distinct northern flavour, is about a group of working-class friends finding unconventional ways to win at life in northern suburbia.
Vinnie (Gilgun), a Lancashire lad with bipolar disorder, and Dylan (Molony), his razor-smart best mate, are inseparable and utterly co-dependant. They’ve hardly spent a day apart since birth. But Dylan’s girlfriend Erin (Keegan) might just shake things up for good with her plans to leave town and start a new life for herself and her kid, Tyler. Read more
This Is England star Joe Gilgun, Ripper Street’s Damien Molony and Our Girl’s Michelle Keegan are to front a new working class comedy for Sky produced by Calamity Films, the company behind Renée Zellweger’s forthcoming Judy Garland biopic.
Brassic has been co-created by Gilgun and Danny Brocklehurst, the writer behind Netflix’s Michael C Hall-fronted thriller Safe. It stars Gilgun as Vinnie, a man from the north of England with bipolar disorder and his best mate Dylan, played by Molony, whose girlfriend Erin, played by Keegan decides to leave town. Dylan is faced with the impossible decision between a fresh start with the love of his life or staying behind with his inseparable gang of mates that he can’t live without.
Such a cool project, with a fantastic cast, totally love Joe Gilgun, know him from Misfits and Preacher. And the writing is going to be quality too. Yes, 'the new Shameless' has me sold!
It sounds like another comedy with a strong drama element - especially interesting that there will be a bipolar theme based on JG's life.
Particularly happy that this is a leading role for Damien, who is playing the best friend of Joe Gilgun's character.
This is exciting! Great that Damien will be in another comedy as we know what a brilliant comic actor he is. Nothing better than comedy edged with pathos. Fantastic that Damien will have such a prominent role too. The only thing I'm sad about is that I don't have Sky :(
Fantastic isn't it Jane! 'Shameless' was an award-winning, long-running UK TV comedy drama, also set in Northern England and focussing on working class culture, remade in the US and is still going - I love both versions, well worth a look - it is certainly edgy drama!
Rosie, I used to have Now tv before Sky. I only used it for about three months, in order to watch Game of Thrones. The main reason I'm with Sky is for the internet - I've got a good deal on the bundle. Now tv is a good way of watching Sky and you're not tied into a contract.
It does look like they're having a blast! Good question Sana, not sure where exactly filming is taking place, but these scenes are at a village fair, which I presume is a set specifically for the shoot.
It's frustrating as heck Rosie! Most of the press got his name wrong, as well as in one case their factual error of saying he was in Shameless!
Totes exciting Jane! It sounds like Damien's Dylan is the brains behind the operation, sooo intrigued already about his character. From what we're reading the premise of Brassic is that he might leave his gang behind to be with Erin, which is going to make for properly tense comedy!
There has been a bit of Brassic filming news in recent days, mostly about Michelle Keegan, some annoyingly gossipy, with a few pics (but none of DaMo!). They were filming in the streets of Bacup (for our international forumers - a town in Lancashire Northern England!) but have apparently now moved on to Manchester. More info at the Manchester Evening News and Rossendale Free Press.
One month seems an awfully short time to shoot 6 episodes - but I guess Suspects did it even quicker! Perhaps she means wrapped for the week - or this block of filming?
Fingers crossed Damien posts his usual 'wrapped' photo if filming is completed!
Brassic is still filming! No solid news, but dubious tabloid reporting continues from which we have learned Michelle Keegan has many outfits including DMs, flares, mini skirts and dungarees (!!) Locations include the street, a caravan park, a country fair and outside a strip club (!!!)
Oh and The Sun are finally spelling Damien's name right, and OK magazine have stopped describing him as 'Shameless star'! Hurrah!
