What a great start to the series! Full of humour and heartbreak. Marcella really does get herself into some terribly tangled messes.
I love that Orlando the cat is watching Killing Eve! But please stop feeding him human food!!
Marcella's date with Jon was adorable but it looks like the path to true love won't be running smoothly for them. I hope that we get to see some of Jon's artwork.
Oh my goodness, poor, poor Jon. I was really sorry for him. A really great start to the 2 season. The best (besides Joncella of course) I found the therapist. He is amazing. Marcellas flashbacks are so funny..
I have to watch it again, then with subtitles. Unfortunately, I did not understand everything. Marcella can speak sooo very fast.
The first half of the opening episode is jaunty, with flashbacks to embarrassing memories ramping up the gag rate, while the second puts more stock on the emotional aspects as Marcella and Jon test out their relationship. Conaty holds this mood longer than you might expect from a comedy – and the atmosphere is eventually punctured by drama, not a joke. It shows there’s some substance beyond the punchlines. But definitely it's the witty, silly, but-still-grounded-in-reality humour that makes GameFace a winner.
This series is both very funny and properly smart. The characters are well drawn and the scenarios feel grounded in a very specific type of London reality – of a woman who grew up in the city and has the accent to prove it. It’s the kind of comedy – both very broad and carefully specific – that’s incredibly difficult to get right. Conaty makes it look easy.
To be honest, at the entrance scene before we saw the dungeon I thought that the joke there would have been that she has just a small role in a play where she just has to say one line or something similar.
I loved Jon and Marcella's date! They're really beautiful together. They have such an amazing chemistry.
I would love to see some of Jon's artwork as well. It's great to find out more about Jon and his life/past. It gives his character more depth.
I think Marcella shouldn't have lied to Jon about her driving test, though. After what he said about his ex-girlfriend, I think it could become quite a big problem between them.

Hi HLH! Great to see you and hear what you thought!
Yes, the opening was a real surprise, that's what made it even more funny for me! Oh my, each time I think of it I laugh out loud!
Marcella and Jon really do have sizzling chemistry, I really agree with you about them being beautiful together. Awkward and adorable. The date scene in the restaurant was gorgeous, those smiles! Loved all the anecdotes, especially about Jon thinking his pets had gone to the movies And they kissed! And then... Oh I feel for them both, it's like 1 step forward 2 steps back all the time!
Trust is definitely going to be a big issue going forward, the facts make Marcella appear to be really duplicitous but she just gets herself into these tangles. She did sleep with Simon though... and that is something we spoke about at the end of the last series, whether she would. should tell Jon. In this episode she only seemed to want to tell him about the driving test prank and not about Simon, in terms of their day time date and the way she was so distracted... the fact that he has found out the way he has.. I don't know if that helps things either.
And what is Simon doing?! Why is he living at Marcella's Mum's house? and why is he hugging her for passing her driving test! Noooo Simon! Let her get over and away from you!
Back to the driving test.. I think if she hadn't been interrupted and told him that she's passed she may have got away with it as a prank? Jon is a very cool and accepting guy, and considering her reason for not telling him was so that she could keep seeing him, I think Jon would have been ok with it. But now... now the bigger lie is out and he has a history of girlfriends lying...
This episode has some of the best Damien smiles, Ever.
But all of these as well! Look at Jon's little face!
Isn't our fave actor one of the most emotionally radiant and rangeiest actor there is? And bravo to Roisin C for writing all of this into the material! Not just a comedy, and all of this in just the Joncella scenes - so much packed into half an hour!
Damien seems to be more around than ever in this series, if you think about the amount of screen time he had in the first episode compared to other non Marcella characters...
Marcella has got herself into a right pickle with Jon (the next episode is called 'Pickle' - perhaps relating to this?) But it is non intentional.. you can forgive her motives for wanting to still keep seeing Jon, and that it was obvs based on her insecurity that if she passed he wouldn't want to see her? Which of course he would and had booked dinner for that very outcome! and then Marcella's happy dance behind her front door - love that!
No one has mentioned the filthy, Tory rat scene - hilarious!
